Location : 5901 Pirates Road, North Pender Island. Pender Island is located in the Salish Sea, between Vancouver on the mainland and Sidney on Vancouver Island, and just north of the American San Juan Islands.
Access : To get to Pender Island you can take BC Ferries to Otter Bay Ferry Terminal on North Pender Island. From Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal on Vancouver Island it is a 40 minute trip. From Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal near Vancouver on the mainland it is approximately a 2 hour trip.

You can also go by air with Harbour Air or Sea Air from services in Victoria and Vancouver. If you are coming from one of the other Gulf Islands, you can reach Pender Island by private boat or water taxi. There are three marinas and three public docks on the Penders. Canada Customs is located at Bedwell Harbour and operates between May and September. Visitors arriving by boat or float plane from the U.S. can clear customs at this site.

Recreation : Pender Island has a good number of parks, beaches, marinas and natural areas. On the Penders you can rent kayaks, cars, boats and horses. You can beach comb, picnic, hike, golf, fish, play tennis, sail or swim in one of several outdoor heated pools. Mount Norman has a panoramic view of the Gulf Islands and the hike to the peak is about 30 minutes long. Be sure to drive the Island and view the bridge of the man made canal that separates North and South Pender. Prior Centennial Park Provincial Park provides camping facilities; Beaumont Marine Park does likewise for boaters. Recently acquired parklands include the 532 acre Pacific Marine Heritage Legacy Park and the protected Medicine Beach wetlands. Trails cross Mt. Norman Regional Park and Mt. Elizabeth Park. Trails can also be found in Magic Lake Estates, at Mt. George, Mt. Menzies and Oak Bluffs. Signs mark the many accesses to beaches and scenic viewpoints around the islands.

There’s a 9-hole golf course near Otter Bay, a 27-pin disc-golf course in Magic Lake Estates, swimming pools at the marinas, kayak-rentals and guided fishing. Also available are several tennis courts, a ball diamond and several children’s playgrounds. Pender Island is a relatively new wine growing area with one vineyard that has won several awards. The winery offers daily wine tasting and tours and hosts the annual Winestock Music Festival.
Area Data : Pender Island consists of two islands, North Pender and South Pender totalling about 34 square kilometres, which are separated by a narrow canal connected by a one-lane bridge. Pender Island enjoys a sub-Mediterranean climate and features open farmland, rolling forested hills, several lakes and small mountains, as well as many coves and beaches. In fact, Pender Island offers the most public beach access points of any of the Gulf Islands.

Pender Island is a vibrant community with approximately 2,200 full time residents. It is a choice weekend and year round holiday destination and in the summer the island population doubles when seasonal residents and visitors arrive to cycle, hike, cruise, scuba dive, golf, fish or enjoy a peaceful retreat at one of the resorts or B&B’s. The clinic on the Penders has medical and dental facilities as well as optometry, physiotherapy and acupuncture services. Other health facilities and services include a fitness centre, alternative medicine and spas. Additional community services include school, library with internet facilities; a museum and a recycling facility all provide valuable services to residents and visitors alike. Churches welcome visitors and include a United Community Church, an Anglican Church and a Catholic Chapel. There is also a Marriage Commissioner on island.
