History:

KAMLOOPS

Derived from the native word “Kahm-o-loops” meaning “the meeting of the waters”. The names Fort Kamloops, Fort Thompson and Thompson River Post were used interchangeably during the fur-trading period. As a main junction in the region, KamIoops became a fur-trading centre in 1812 and a depot for gold seekers in 1860. When the gold rush faded some miners remained and turned to farming, setting up ranches all around the city. When a post office was established in 1870, the name Kamloops was officially chosen. By 1886 the first transcontinental train passed through the city on the newly constructed Canadian Pacific Railway, further contributing to its status as a main junction in BC. The City of Kamloops was incorporated in 1893.

The owner reports that Canada’s first & most notorious bank robber, Billy Miner, was captured within sight of Campbell Lake and later incarcerated.
