Area Data:

Qualicum Beach gently spreads in front of one of the most pleasant small towns on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Pause here at any of the numerous beachside pullouts and smell the salt air intermingled with the perfume from the many private and public floral displays.

The original Coast Salish settlers of this area knew it as "where the dog salmon run" - a wonderful place to fish, pick berries, and dig for clams. The name Qualicum Beach is derived from Quallchum, an early variation of this term.

Steeped in quaint British heritage, and famous for its local arts, crafts and beautiful English gardens, modern day Qualicum Beach offers visitors the same gentle countryside and golden, seemingly endless, sandy beaches. Six provincial parks are located within thirty minutes drive from Qualicum Beach.

Like its close neighbour Parksville, Qualicum Beach is an enchanting seaside village that will capture your heart. Discover for yourself why so many people return again and again to this central Vancouver Island getaway. Accessible by road, rail or air, the central location of Qualicum Beach makes this oceanside playground a convenient base from which to enjoy all your vacation activities on Vancouver Island.

Recreation:

Spider Lake Provincial Park encompasses Spider Lake and its shoreline, west of Parksville on Vancouver Island. This quiet and peaceful park is a day-use only recreation area.

The 65-hectare park is a great place for a family outing, with the warm water lake being noted for its excellent swimming, canoeing and kayaking potential. Paddlers can spend a peaceful afternoon exploring the shoreline and the many secluded bays. Shaded lakeside trails and a lovely sandy beach make Spider Lake a favoured destination.

Spider Lake (57 hectares) contains smallmouth bass, which provide year round fishing. The lake is also stocked with both steelhead and rainbow trout that provide plenty of excitement on a fly or light tackle. Powerboats are prohibited on the lake, but small cartoppers can be launched from the beach beside the parking lot. Nearby Horne Lake provides good fishing year-round for rainbow and cutthroat trout, steelhead and kokanee. Full boat launch facilities are available at the private campsite near the west end of Horne Lake.
